What is a philosophy of education, and why should it be important to you?

A philosophy of education is very important. When a person has a philosophy in why they teach, this can show how much a person loves their job. It’s important for a teacher to know why they want to teach and what beliefs they have. Some reasons a philosophy is important to have is to know what students should learn, or what are schools for, and how teachers should teach. A person can develop their own philosophy as time goes by and this will help shape a coherent educational philosophy.

Ancient Greece is the birthplace of western philosophy and it’s where the foundation was laid for most philosophers. Many teachers approach the Socratic method because, he helped his students get a better and deeper understanding to clear ideas by questioning his students repeatedly. He also loved to challenge his students. Plato who was one of Socrates disciples featured some of Socrates teaching approaches and later founded the Academy. The academy is considered one of the first universities. Aristotle studied under Plato and years later tutored Alexander the Great and started his own school that was called, Lyceum. Aristotle is known for witting influential work in many subject areas. Aristotle also promoted the “Golden Mean” which is a doctrine.
