What are your legal rights and responsibilities as a teacher?

Teachers have many legal rights and responsibilities. Teachers have the right to not answer or avoid answering questions that are not professional during an interview. Also, if sexual harassment happens, teachers are protected under Title IX for sexual harassment and sex discrimination in employment. Teachers also have academic freedom, as longest the student learns appropriate information in an environment that is conducive to learning. Responsibilities teacher have, is to supervise children at all times. Teachers have the right to strike, freedom of speech in some cases, and fair use with conditions.

 

What legal rights do students enjoy?

Students have legal rights and legal responsibilities. One legal right students and parents have, is The Family Rights and Privacy Act. This act allows parents to see their child’s educational record upon request and once a child is 18 years of age they can see it as well.  This act is also known as the Buckley Amendment. Students are also allowed to grade their peers’ papers and share grades with others. When students get disciplined at school, they have the right to know what rule they’ve broken and the evidence the school has, these legal rights fall under the fourteenth amendment to guarantee the students due process. Students also have legal rights of free speech, if they want to salute the flag, and students can also sue a school district for monetary damages in cases of sexual harassment.
