Chapter 6 Questions

Why should the visual arts be integrated into science, social studies, etc?

Arts allow for a different form of communication of complex ideas in a non verbal way. It also engages affective learning and learning through senses. Visual arts allows for hands-on learning and cross subject curriculum. The very nature of art lends itself to science, math, and social studies. In science art can be used to make observations on subjects and patterns. In social studies students can examine different historical events and people students are also able to examine the different art forms of the time.

What do teachers need to know to meaningfully integrate the visual arts?

In order to meaningfully integrate the visual arts teachers need to understand them. Teachers must be well informed and versed in art skills and content. The seven categories of art that are recommended for teachers are: Purposes, Processes, People, Media, Products, Elements and Concepts, and other special visual arts topics (ex: Discipline-Based Art Education).

How can classroom teachers use the ten AI Pillars to implement visual arts integration?

Teachers use the ten AI Pillars to create unit plans that span across disciplines and creating classrooms that engage the senses and invite students to learn creatively. The AI Pillars also embrace multiple intelligences and a diverse set of learners. Teachers can also use them to create assessments that are more accurate to students retention level then tests.

Research Update

I thought that the research presented in this update was fascinating. As a teacher I have noticed myself the way that my students engage when I give them visual arts integrated assignments. Something as "boring" as vocabulary words can be exciting and meaningful when all I have to do is let them draw them out. Below is a video that I thought highlighted this researches use of art:

Resources

Lesson planning: KinderArt

Primary Grade Art Lessons (K-Gr.2/Age 5-8). Retrieved September 27, 2016, from http://www.kinderart.com/artlessonsbygrade/primary.shtml
My goal is to be a kindergarten teacher. This website has amazing lesson ideas and activities to integrate art into the curriculum.

Game and/or activity based: List of Online Games

 McGee, T. F. (n.d.). Art room online games. Retrieved September 27, 2016, from http://theresafmcgee.edu.glogster.com/art-room-online-games

I chose this site because it was easy to navigate and had great resources. This Glogster has 13 links to different art-based online games that are user friendly for even the youngest child. They are perfect tie-ins for the end of a lesson that help assess students, and they are fun.
Museum site with an education department: Smithsonian’s History Explorer

Smithsonian's History Explorer. (n.d.). Retrieved September 27, 2016, from https://historyexplorer.si.edu/
This site has lesson plans, media, museum artifacts, and more. It is a great way to bring art into the classroom and give students the ability to see art they otherwise wouldn't be able to see. It can be an awesome way to let the kids do a scavenger hunt or virtual fieldtrip to a place they can't reach in real life.

I really enjoyed these videos was how they talk about the artist life and how it effected their work. I think these would be great introduction videos for lessons on artist or when talking about a art period.
