What grade would I like to teach?  I definitely want to teach at the elementary school level.  Because my favorite grade was second, and my favorite teacher was my second grade teacher, I have always wanted to teach second grade.  Since taking college courses in the education field, I have observed classes at different grade levels.  I was very surprised at how much I enjoyed observing fifth grade.  I enjoyed how the older students were able to take direction well and had more independence.  I would ultimately like to teach any grade from first through fifth.

Teaching Style:  My teaching style is something I plan to continually work on and modify to best fit the needs of my students.  I plan on incorporating a lot of music and art projects into my teaching.  I plan on using an activity style often, as I feel students learn best by doing.  I will use many hands-on activities, project based learning, and makerspace.  I would like to steer away from lecturing as much as possible.  I would prefer to teach in more of a demonstration style.  I know every student learns differently, so I plan on teaching to each of the different multiple intelligences.  I also feel collaboration amongst students facilitates learning, so I plan on having students work together often.  As I have a love for reading, I will use children's literature to teach many lessons.  I also feel students learn through play.  I plan on having many different lessons where students play educational games, act out plays, or take part in other imaginative play.  I feel it is also important to integrate technology into the classroom of today's students and plan on utilizing it in fun and educational ways.

My position on classroom flipping:  A flipped classroom is where students learn the information they would have learned in class through watching a video as homework made by the teacher. The next day in school the students do the kinds of things they would have done for homework, but the teacher is there to help them with it. It is also a good opportunity to have students collaborate in groups or to do fun educational experiments and projects. At first, I thought the idea of a flipped classroom would apply more to the older grades like high school, but after doing some research I can see flipped classrooms working well at the elementary level as well. The model of a flipped classroom frees up class time to work on a class project as well as go over any material students are finding difficult. Not only is a hands-on experiment more fun than a boring lecture, but it solidifies what they learned in the video at home. I can definitely see myself using flipped classroom lessons, particularly when incorporating in class projects.

Multiple Intelligences:  Children all have certain strengths and weaknesses.  Different children learn differently.  By engaging students in activities that teach to each of the eight different types of intelligences, every child is more able to succeed.  The theory of multiple intelligences suggests that children have differing levels of each of the eight different types of intelligence.  Every child has at least one intelligence in which they thrive, and teaching to those strengths can help students be more successful.  I think planning around these eight intelligences can really motivate kids and give them more academic confidence in themselves.  Each student truly can see that even if they struggle in one area, they excel in another.  I really love the theory behind multiple intelligences.  I love how it offers so many different choices for children to learn.  Providing activities in the eight different intelligences ensures that each student will find the right learning niche and be able to grasp what is being taught while enjoying the process.  I definitely plan to have many lessons that incorporate multiple intelligences once I am a teacher in the classroom.
