2nd GRADE MATH STANDARDS
2.0A Operations and Algebraic Thinking
GAMES
- The goal is to be the first player to reach 100.
- On your turn, roll the dice and determine the sum. You can either stop and record that sum or continue rolling and add the new sums together.
- Roll the pair of dice as many times as you choose. Again, when you decide to stop, record the current total for your score (and add it to your previous score).
But beware! If you roll a 1 on exactly one die, your turn ends and 0 is your recorded score for that turn. And, if you roll double 1’s, your turn ends and your entire score is set back to 0.
Find every number between 1 and 20 using only 4's.
examples: 4+4+4+4=16
4/4+4+4=9
(4x4)+4/4=17
Odd and Even Numbers Cloud Catcher
learn to recognize odd and even number patterns.
- This game is played in partners. Two children share a blank 100 grid.
- The first partner rolls two number dice.
- The numbers that come up are the numbers the child uses to make an array on the 100 grid.
- They can put the array anywhere on the grid, but the goal is to fill up the grid to get it as full as possible.
- After the player draws the array on the grid, she writes in the number sentence that describes the grid.
- The second player then rolls the dice, draws the number grid and records their number sentence.
- The game ends when both players have rolled the dice and cannot put any more arrays on the grid.
- How close to 100 can you get?

2.NBT Number and Operations in Base Ten
GAMES
Practice with identifying three-digit numbers.
practice identifying three-digit numbers and creating visual representations by loading blocks of hundreds, tens, and ones to match the number displayed.
focuses on skip-counting by 10. Using this type of hundreds chart to skip-count is a great way to help kids learn about patterns in numbers. They can check out the column that appears as they skip-count. This skill leads into multiplication in the later grades, and can also help kids build number sense and learn concepts of number values.

2.G Geometry
GAMES
This 2D and 3D shape sort game teaches students that two-dimensional shapes are flat, and three-dimensional shapes are solid. They are then tasked with sorting common 2D and 3D shapes, such as cubes, cylinders, squares, triangles, pyramids and circles, into the right boxes.
Geometry Picnic: Halves, Thirds, Quarters
practice geometrical concepts by identifying which foods have been partitioned into equal amounts.
Work with a partner. Take turns being the skeptic or the convincer. When you are the convincer your job is to be convincing! Give reasons for all of your statements. Skeptics must be skeptical! Don’t be easily convinced. Require reasons and justifications that make sense to you.
For each of the problems below one person should make the shape and then be convincing. Your partner is the skeptic. When you move to the next question switch roles. Start with a square sheet of paper and make folds to construct a new shape. Explain how you know the shape you constructed has the specified area.
Start with a square sheet of paper and make folds to construct a new shape. Explain how you know the shape you constructed has the specified area.
1. Construct a square with exactly ¼ the area of the original square. Convince yourself and
then your partner that it is a square and has ¼ of the area.
2. Construct a triangle with exactly ¼ the area of the original square. Convince yourself
and then your partner that it has ¼ of the area.
3. Construct another triangle, also with ¼ the area, that is not congruent to the first one
you constructed. Convince yourself and then your partner that it has ¼ of the area.
4. Construct a square with exactly ½ the area of the original square. Convince yourself and
then your partner that it is a square and has ½ of the area.
5. Construct another square, also with ½ the area, that is oriented differently from the
one you constructed in #4. Convince yourself and then your partner that it has ½ of the
area.
