Research Update 10.1 Dance and Achievement
Dance and music opportunities offered compelling social benefits for underprivileged students, including an emotional safe haven; making them feel special; acting as assimilation tools for immigrants and new kids; and bolstering new friendships. The arts opportunities “helped most achieve success both in and outside of school” (Fiske, 1999, pp. 77-78).
Response:
I found this research update to be most meaningful because it discusses how dance promotes many benefits for students. Dance can be very therapeutic and help students alleviate stresses that they face in their everyday lives. Dance also enables students to express themselves and communicate their ideas and feelings in a healthy and positive way. Dance engages the body and the mind, which allows students to develop new ways of thinking and learning. Through dance, students develop self-control, confidence, and success in their lives socially, physically, and academically.

LessonPlanet.com is a wonderful teacher resource that is used to plan, share and inspire. I found this website to be very resourceful when looking into planning dance lessons. I really like how the website allows you to search for resources by grade level. Many of the dance lessons on the website also integrate other content areas. The website provides you with many resources to use and incorporate into lessons.

This website provides online interactive dance games for children. I think young students would be very excited to engage in these dance games, which would help teach them about dance, encourage them to dance, get them ready to learn, and promote health.

This is an engaging interactive website I found that teaches about music. The website teaches about different composers by their country of origin and different kinds of instruments. The website provides educational interactive games. The website also discusses minority musicians and composers. I really enjoyed looking through this website, and will definitely incorporate it into future lessons on music.

Inside Edition. Watch 2nd Grade Teacher Encourage Students Every Morning With Fun Song and Dance. Retrieved November 18, 2017, from https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lxxf2quVkUE&feature=youtu.be
I thought this video was a great example of a way to use music and dance in the classroom to engage students. The teacher took an interest in what kind of music her students enjoyed, and then used that song and dance to create something that would benefit her class. The teacher changed the lyrics to a popular song and incorporated its dance moves into a morning routine that encourages her students to get ready to learn and get along with one another. I thought this teacher used great creativity and I would definitely follow her approach on song and dance.
Seed Strategies (Chapter 11)
The seed strategy in Chapter 11 that I found would be meaningful in my future classroom is using dance and movement to form energizers and warm-ups. Energizers and warm-ups are used to get the students attention, set a mood, and warm-up the body for movement and the brain for thinking. As the text lists, there are many energizers and warm ups for young students. The classic song “Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes” along with the corresponding movements is a great way to get students engaged and ready to learn.
